Volkan is the first beer born in Santorini. It brings you
the inspiration and uniqueness of Santorinian rare flavours. Our company seat
is in Fira, Santorini. Volkan’s owner
is Peter Nomikos, a fifth-generation
descendant of Santorinian vintners. Peter is a business executive, venture
capitalist and founder of Greece Debt Free Inc., a non-profit organisation
formed to help reduce Greek debt to sustainable levels.
·
Our two key
ingredients are Santorinian, Santorini Rare Honey and the Volkan Lavarock™ Filter. We also use Citrus Medica from nearby Naxos Island .
·
Rare Santorini
Honey is because of the very short
flowering season. Santorini Rare Honey is harvested only once a year; this
honey is extremely rare even on Santorini: in August and early September,
without any flowers left, bees visit the hundreds of tons of grapes spread out
in the sun to mature, as part of the traditional method of making Vinsanto, the
local dessert wine. Santorini Rare Honey is added near the end of the Volkan
brewing process, to ensure its source flavours are preserved, giving our beer a
fine, delicate touch of sweetness.
·
Naxos Citrus medica, commonly known as citron, is a rare, fragrant citrus
fruit introduced to Europe by Alexander the
Great and celebrated since Babylonian times for its medicinal powers. Today,
citron essences are harvested and processed for Volkan by Naxos
artisans using methods dating back several centuries. This unique essence is
added to Volkan brews during and after the brewing process, resulting in an
incomparable taste: dry, sharp, earthy and sweet.
·
Volkan Lavarock™ Filter; It is a
proprietary technology Volkan developed for conditioning the brewing water. It
re-creates how Santorini’s groundwater may have tasted thousands of years ago.
The Lavarock™ Filter uses real volcanic rocks (basalt) formed from the
Santorini eruption of 1500 BCE, rich with potassium and other minerals, to lay
the foundation for a complex, flavourful brew.
·
Currently,
Volkan is available in 4 types, the Volkan
Blonde Pilsner the Volkan Black
Wheat Lager & the Volkan Santorini
White. We have
been recently launched at an experimental stage the Volkan Santorini Grey. It is an unfiltered wheat beer, which has
been underway for several months. It's light, refreshing beer low in acidity,
with characteristic aromas of bergamot orange and honey which
is also present to our other 3 beers.
·
In 2013, Volkan has been awarded as the “New Product Innovation of the
Year” at the “International Beer Awards 2013” while its labels
voted amongst t the Top 5 in
the world.
·
At
present, Volkan is successfully
exported to 15 countries, but we
intend to gradually increase our exports once Volkan beers wherever presented
really make great success, in both Greek and international consumers.
